River South (RISO) Greenway Master Plan Public Outreach Meeting

Wednesday, September 9, 2009
7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Overland Golf Course Clubhouse
1801 South Huron Street

(Directions from Santa Fe Drive and Evans interchange: Go west on Evans to South Huron Street. Turn right on South Huron. South Huron dead-ends at West Jewell/Overland Golf Course.)

The public is invited to hear about general planning concepts being envisioned for the RISO Greenway Master Plan area and to seek public input. The objective of the River South Greenway Master Plan is to generate a park, recreation and open space plan that sets a vision for the South Platte River and creates development, financial and regulatory guidelines for parkland along the River between 20th Street to the Denver-Englewood/Sheridan city limits on the south. The project boundary for developing master planning
proposals is defined as the South Platte River and all properties located adjacent to and/or contiguous with the River, approximately 200 feet from the top of the riverbank in either direction. Consideration will be given to opportunity linkages brought about by river improvements in the area between Federal Boulevard on the west to Broadway on the east.

Event Description:
The autumn Old House Fair is scheduled for Saturday, September 12, on Denver’s Lowry Campus at the Stanley British Primary School, 350 Quebec Street, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $10 per person, payable at the door or at www.denversoldhousesociety.org.

The Fair offers 12 workshops on subjects pertinent to old-house owners, exhibits of numerous companies and organizations with products or services for homes build over 50 years ago, and tours of the school, which for many years was open only to Air Force officers and their families. Exhibitors have been requested to provide free 15-minute consultations.

Six energy efficiency workshops on topics relatable for old houses, called the green track, will be offered. The other six workshops will present information pertinent to old houses. Topics covered in the green track include:
• photovoltaic solar panels
• heating an old house and energy efficiency
• restoring and maintaining old windows
• effective use of water and conservation rebates
• caring for old trees
• sewers, plumbing and waste water

Subjects covered in the other track include:
• bricks, mortar and masonry
• architectural styles
• sensitive additions
• updating kitchens with the look of yesteryear
• saving wood floors
• stained and leaded glass windows

Food will be available for sale throughout the day. It will be provided by the school’s students and parents, who are raising money for a trip to London.

The Old House Fair is presented by Denver’s Old House Society, a nonprofit organization, dedicated to educating owners of old houses (50+ years) and helping them protect their neighborhoods. Sponsors for the event include:
Applewood Plumbing, Heating and Electric, Denver Water, Lyons Historic Windows, Nostalgic Homes, Phoenix Window Restoration, Inc., and Van Camp’s Quality Floors.
