Denver Recycles Expands Boundaries for Residential Composting Collection Pilot

Boundaries for WWP participation are if you reside within the following boundaries: North/South – Virginia to I-25.

East/West: Downing to Clarkson.

Denver Recycles has expanded the boundaries for its Composting Collection Pilot program, which means more households in your neighborhood may now be eligible to participate!

Denver residents have proven they are great recyclers, and now Denver Recycles is asking eligible households to sign up for our new COMPOSTING COLLECTION PILOT PROGRAM.  The program will test collection services at 3,300 Denver homes, and participants will be able to recycle organic material such yard debris (leaves, grass, small branches, etc.), food (table scraps, meat, vegetable scraps, etc.) and soiled paper (paper milk cartons, paper coffee cups, used napkins, etc). Denver Recycles will provide participants with a 65-gallon green cart (the same size as the Denver Recycles purple cart) and a small kitchen pail to collect the organic materials.  Carts will be serviced weekly during the fall and spring and every other week through the winter, and the material will be delivered to a commercial composter.

Don’t delay.  Space in the pilot program is See if you are eligible for the program and sign up today by visiting us online at DenverGov.org/DenverRecycles

Leaves are accepted in the composting pilot program.  However, if residents have too many leaves to fit in their green cart and can’t store them until their next pickup, or if residents are not part of the pilot program, then they can still recycle their leaves at one of five LeafDrop locations on Sundays in November (2, 9 & 16), from 10 AM to 4 PM.  Also, between Oct. 6 and Dec. 5, two weekday (Mon.-Fri.) drop-off locations will be available to residents.  Visit DenverGov.org/DenverRecycles or call 720-865-6810 for more information.

Why Compost?
*  Organic material makes up about 58% of what Denver residents send to the landfill.
*  Methane is generated in landfills as organic material decays under anaerobic (without oxygen) conditions.
*  Methane is a greenhouse gas 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
*  Composting is a way to divert organic material from landfills, thereby reducing climate warming gases generated from landfills.
*  Composting is nature’s way of recycling and returning valuable organic matter and nutrients to the soil to be used again.

2008 DENVER LEAFDROP

Keeping your leaves off the street and turning them into compost.

Fall is upon us and so is the annual ritual of raking leaves. Denver Recycles’ LeafDrop program once again will be providing options for Denver residents to compost their leaves.

We encourage residents to reuse and recycle their leaves by digging them into the garden, composting them or using a lawn mower to mulch small amounts into the lawn. This adds nutrients and helps the soil retain moisture.
