Historic walking tour of south-central Denver (Byers School)

A lecture on "A Century of Change in Old South Denver" will be presented by Dr. Thomas J. Noel, CU-Denver Professor of History and Director of Public History, Preservation & Colorado Studies on April 13, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. This lecture will take place at First Christian Reformed Church located at 1814 S. Emerson St. , in conjunction with their 100th anniversary celebration. Dr. Noel is renowned for his expertise on Denver and Colorado. This event is free and open to the public. DPL lecture: Researching, Restoring and Remodeling Your Classic Home

As part of this weekend's Doors Open Denver festivities, the Denver Public Library is offering a free talk on "Researching, Restoring and Remodeling Your Classic Home."

Details of the session have been described as follows:

Saturday, April 14, 2007, 1-4 p.m.
The Central Library, Level B2 Conference Center

An overview of architectural styles in the Queen City of the Plains, from 1860-2006, covering buildings from the log cabin to the suburban tract will start the program. Emphasis will be on the classic Denver styles, such as Victorian, Foursquare, bungalow, Tudor and ranch. Learn what distinguishes one style from another, how some homes are blends of several styles and how to identify your classic home.

Architect Doug Walter, winner of a 2006 Historic Denver Restoration for Living Award, will describe certain key maintenance items that must be addressed to keep the home safe, warm and dry for years to come along with the warning signs to look out for. For those who live in a historic district, the application and approval process will be outlined. For those owners of classic homes who really want to live a 21st century lifestyle in a 20th century house, Walter will discuss how to add on with sensitivity to the original architectural style. Walter’s entertaining slide presentation will differentiate between the rigors of restoration, the activities that constitute rehabilitation and the more extensive activities that make up remodeling.

WWPNA General Meeting and Elections

The annual WWPNA General Meeting and Elections will be held at the Christian Indian Center 501 S. Pearl (the corner of Pearl Street and Virginia Avenue).

Highlights of the meeting:

a) Regular reports of Treasurer and Committee highlights. Committee reports will be available as handouts.
b) "2 Fast and 2 Furious" – a discussion of current and future traffic issues facing our neighborhood.
c) Vote on the change in Bylaws (see below).
d) Nomination and election of directors.

***** Along with elections there will be a discussion of traffic issues in our neighborhood -- Everything from problems with speeders to the outcome of WWPNA's independent study of the impact of area development projects (ie: Gates, Country Club Gardens, etc.) on traffic through our streets. *****

The nominating committee is soliciting candidates to fill six seats on the WWPNA Board of Directors for two year terms. The bylaws require that candidates must be a WWPNA member for at least 30 days prior in order to vote in this election. Candidates may also be nominated from the floor the night of the election.
