Renovation project: Wash Park's Rock & Water GardenThe Washington Park Cultural Landscape Assessment and Preservation Plan indicates several preservation concerns in the lawns, bridges, and waterways in our beloved central park. The "Friends and Neighbors (FANs) of Washington Park" are organizing a restoration for the Rock and Water Garden next to the Lily Pond. The Rock and Water Garden was designed by S. R. DeBoer and built in 1927. According to the plan, “The Rock & Water Garden is artistically placed on the Lily Pond’s eastern hillside, creating a pleasing backdrop to the tranquil setting as well as a picturesque water feature. The garden is primarily built of stacked boulders of various sizes, intertwined with tree and shrub massings. Historic photographs indicated that the plantings above and behind the garden on Franklin Street were less dense, allowing for views out from the Lily Pond as well as providing views in." Currently the Rock and Water Garden is extremely overgrown and is invaded with weeds. The Parks and Recreation six year Capital Improvement Project planning includes the Rock and Water Garden but is a low priority. The first step is to gather some historical information on the original plans. If you would like to become involved or simply learn more, please contact Cindy Johnstone, chair, at 303-733-6570.
